Therapy Diego
Diego has really proven to help others at school. Keep in mind, he is still coming to the middle school with me since he does not go to school with Matthew. Being a middle school, there are a variety of stresses that come with the territory. It just so happens, that my boss (the principal) adores Diego. She deals with so many emotional issues each day with the children (good and not so good) that seeing Diego can often allow her to relax and come down from stresses. I love that. It really makes my frustrations and inconveniences worth it. She really lights up when Diego is around. We also have a kiddo who has some special circumstances at school and when he around Diego he completely relaxes and an enormous sense of joy comes over him. He can even be told that his behavior will determine if he will get to see Diego today. He is very smart and is able to maintain a level of self-control that most middle school-aged boys struggle with daily. Diego has really proven to be a huge help for his behavior and ability to try to control his behaviors. So, every Thursday, we have a standing date during the last hour of the day where he can come to my classroom and take Diego outside for a potty and fetching break. He really thrives and loves the responsibility. His mother ran into me at a Starbucks a few weeks ago. We have never met, but I happened to have Diego with me. She approached me and introduced herself as this young man's mother. She just praised me up and down for the amazing gift I have been in his life. Now, that felt really great! When I get frustrated about having Diego at school with me, I just think about those two people whose lives are truly touched by Diego's presence. I hope that my heart can stay fully devoted to that mission. :-)
